Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Star Wars The Force Awakens Review: Disappointing…. IS NOT what this movie is! A movie fans have been waiting ten years for. The hype was bigger than the size of Jupiter. And I am pleased to say it has lived up to it in every way.

The last Star Wars film to hit the cinemas was in 2005 (revenge of the Sith). The latest installment to the epic space opera is set 30 years after the events of Return Of The Jedi (released in 1983). Luke Skywalker, the last Jedi has disappeared and the First Order has risen and seeks to eliminate Luke and the Republic.

The film opens with Resistance pilot Poe Dameron (played by Oscar Issac) paying a visit to the Elder Lor San Tekka at a village on the planet Jakku to obtain a map to Luke Skywalker’s location. The village soon gets attacked by Kylo Ren (played by Adam Driver) and his army of stormtroopers. (The stormtroopers are improved! They actually hit things now! They used to miss at point blank.) The village gets destroyed and Poe gets captured while his droid BB-8 escapes with the map. Kylo Ren tortures Poe and learns of BB-8. Stormtrooper FN-2187 (played by John Boyega), unable to kill for the First Order, saves Poe and they both escape. Poe gives FN-2187 the name “FINN”.

Meanwhile BB-8 meets Rey (played by Daisy Ridley), a scavenger at a junkyard. In the midst of their escape, Finn and Poe crash on Jakku. With Poe presumed dead, Finn heads off alone and meets BB-8 and Rey. They escape a First Order Airstrike in the Millennium Falcon and eventually meet a familiar face of the Star Wars franchise, Han Solo (played by Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca.

As the film progresses, we get to see Leia (played by Carrie Fisher), C-3PO and R2-D2 all returning from the previous movies! Poe is also revealed to be alive.

Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher reprise their roles as Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Leia respectively. Every fan, new and old, rejoices as they see their favorite classics back in action! Han Solo takes up a major role in the film as he reminds everyone why he was such a fan favorite back in the days in the first place. Leia too has a big role. Luke Skywalker in this movie is a huge part of the main story but does not appear much.(I am trying not to spoil anything here.)

Rey, a scavenger in search of her family (played by Daisy Ridley) and Finn a former stormtrooper who leaves the First Order (played by John Boyega) are new faces to the franchise and serves as what is the next generation of the Star Wars franchise. Rey gives fans so much to look forward to in the future of the franchise. Daisy Ridley does a good job in portraying her character and this film displays her acting skills at its finest. Finn on the other hand feels like nothing but a random addition that feels unnecessary at some points of the film. However the potential is there and will definitely have space for development in future installments of the franchise. Finn’s bravery and courage make him a very likable character and John Boyega is perfect for the role. Adam Driver does a brilliant job portraying the villain Kylo Ren. He is extremely cool but also shows a weaker and vulnerable side. Being Han Solo and Leia’s son, we will definitely see more of him in the future.

BB-8, the droid which was used heavily in marketing of the film is extremely cute and lovable. (I would really like to own my very own BB-8 unit!) Special effects and CGI is very well made. Everything looks real and believable. It felt like a movie made with technology from the future.

All in all this movie gives the longtime fans what they have been waiting for. If you are a newcomer? Well you will enjoy this movie too. This movie is what many thought would be movie of the year and in my eyes, it certainly is. It is a great continuation to what already was an epic franchise. It is also a great start to the Star Wars sequel trilogy. The next episode is scheduled to be released in May 2017 and you can be sure I’ll be looking forward to it!

I give this movie 9.8/10
