Review: Erica starts dating Johnny Atkins after he convinces her to listen to the band Rush. Murray forbids her to go out with him, but of course Erica goes against him and does it anyway. Murray sets up an intervention because he realizes that she won’t listen to him, but maybe she will listen to her friends. But Erica gets even more angry because Murray sets up everyone she cares about against her and chooses Johnny over all of them and will even marry him if she has to, to prove a point. But when Johnny finds out she is just using him against her friends and family, he gets mad and kicks her out of his Rush cover band. With only a few days before the Battle of the Bands at school, Erica is sad that she won’t be able to play, but Murray convinces her to go anyway. And so she creates her own Rush cover band with Lainey and Carla and plays in the school concert.
Meanwhile, Barry makes Beverly realize that she has always favored Adam over him, and she decides that she will now only focus on Barry. Both Barry and Adam are very pleased to hear this, especially Adam who can now plan his own birthday party, like he always wanted. Not soon after Beverly declared Barry her favorite son, he sees that being her favorite is not as great as he thought it would be, but Adam doesn’t want to take Bev back. However, when Adam finds out that planning a party is hard, he realizes that he needs her. Beverly is happy to call Adam her favorite son again and plans an epic party for him.
I enjoyed big parts of this episode, but those good parts were kind of overshadowed by how mean Erica was this week. She never actually apologized to Johnny for using him and I don’t think there was enough focus on her doing such a crappy thing to Johnny. I did however really like the final scene. It’s always great to hear Erica and Lainey sing, and the combination with Adam’s party was perfect. I also really enjoyed all the scenes Pops was in, he was very funny in this episode.
