The Big Bang Theory (S10E01) “The Conjugal Conjecture”

Review: We ended last season the night before Leonard and Penny’s wedding ceremony, with a possible hookup between Leonard’s father and Sheldon’s mother. Season 10 kicks off with awkward conversations about Alfred and Mary spending the night together. As it turns out, nothing really happened, but they do decide to start hanging out more, which makes the situation uncomfortable for both Sheldon and Beverly. To add to the drama, Penny’s father Wyatt (Keith Carradine) and never before seen mother Susan (Katey Sagal) and brother Randall (Jack McBrayer) arrive as well. Susan is very afraid of meeting the other parents because of their differences, especially with Randall’s recent history of cooking and selling crystal meth.
Most of the episode revolves around the parents, but there is another storyline involving Raj, Howard and Bernadette. Howard is still freaking out a little about the government trying to steal his guidance system and when a Colonel (Dean Norris) suddenly comes by the house, searching for Howard, it looks like he did have a reason to freak out. Of course the focus in this episode was more on the wedding ceremony than this storyline, and I enjoyed the few short scenes about it, but I really want them to explore this storyline more. Howard and Colonel Williams did arrange a meeting and after seeing the promo for next week, I think most of that episode will be about the guidance system, so I’m looking forward to see that.
When it’s time for the ceremony, things still haven’t calmed down. But, thanks to Bernadette shutting everybody down, Leonard and Penny’s second wedding turns out to be very nice. They share their vows, which makes Alfred and Beverly realize that their relationship wasn’t so bad after all because the outcome was Leonard. And for the first time in this episode, we see the two agree with each other. Not only Leonard’s parents feel the need to say something, also Sheldon wants to speak up. He tells Leonard how important he has always been to him, as well as Penny. After that Bernadette pronounces them husband and wife (and weird other husband, who came with the apartment). It was great to see Sheldon open up like that (like we’ve seen him do a few times last season as well), and I wonder how long it will take for him to let Leonard and Penny live on their own.
This episode had an amazing amount of great guest stars and it was nice to see them all work together. Between Beverly’s vulnerability and Sheldon opening up there was some character development, which is always great to see. The episode was pretty funny, although there were some scenes and jokes that didn’t really work for me. However, I think this was a solid season premiere to, what I hope to be, a good and interesting new season.
