Girls (S06E01) “All I Ever Wanted”

As we delve back into the world of Girls for its sixth and final season, there is a feeling that perhaps the events leading up to the end will have a full circle kind of feeling.

Instead of being ushered into this episode with some sort of chaotic mess we are met with quite the opposite. Hannah (Lena Dunham) has been published in the newspaper. There are her words out there in the open for all to read. All of the familiar faces flash by. We are met with Adam (Adam Driver) intensely reads the article with Jessa (Jemima Kirke) nervously hovering nearby.

We get a glimpse into the lives of everyone, a nice welcome back into the Girls life. Marnie (Allison Williams) is dealing with her divorce from Desi (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and the relationship that has been rekindled between her and Ray (Alex Karpovsky). Trying to be mature about things she has decided that Ray cannot live with her while she is going through all this emotional turmoil, which is sure to cause some rifts since the only possible place for Ray to crash would be at Shoshanna’s place (Zosia Mamet) since his old apartment is now a “sex dungeon”.

Hannah is riding high with her name in print and she has been offered a position at a magazine. Her look and attitude are just the right fit for the project they want her to work in. She is to infiltrate a “Surf Camp” that entitled rich women attend. Something completely out of her element in every way possible. When she gets there she is certainly like a fish out of water, but that is one of the more endearing qualities about Hannah. She is unapologetic to be herself, even if those standards don’t always measure up to others.

All the dynamic relationships on this show seem to be flowing as they should. Last season we saw the toxic force of Adam and Jessa, there is an implosion ready to happen and it’s just a matter of time now, although their two types of crazies seem to mesh well together. Who will make it out in tact? It’s too early to tell, but I think there will be a lot of surprising events on the horizon for this eclectic group.

It’s almost predictable when Hannah ends up hooking up with her surf instructor, Paul-Louis (Riz Ahmed), and when she gets attached to the idea of him to complex equation that he and his girlfriend have an open “relationship” puts a damper on things. How can she start her life over if she keeps falling into the same pattern?

Meanwhile Marnie is dealing with her own demons. Even though she loves Ray and wants to be with him she is pushing him away. Her jealously is apparent when she realizes that Ray and Shoshanna have a lot more in common, bringing them closer together. It was almost expected for a hook-up between Marnie and Desi to happen, it always seems to be written in the stars for those two, in the most twisted way.

There are so many more episodes to go, and yet I am not ready for the end. The girls have been so much over the past few years it would be nice for them to come together one last time.
