The Goldbergs (S04E15) “So Swayze It’s Crazy”

Review: Adam wants to become a movie star so he makes an acting reel for Beverly to show Edie Robb, the mom of A Christmas Story actor RD Robb, and manager of several child actors. Edie thinks Adam could play in the movie Meatballs 2 as the nerdy kid, but Beverly won’t let that happen. She sees Adam more as the new Patrick Swayze or Tom Cruise. After they get headshots made, Bev sees Adam even more as a leading man, but when Adam finds out Bev rejected the offer for a role in Meatballs 2, he’s very disappointed in his mom. He tells her that he is a nerd and that she just has to accept it. Beverly apologizes to him and tells Adam that he will always be her amazing handsome leading man. But if everyone else sees him as a nerd, he should go out “and be the best nerd the world has ever seen”.

We have seen storylines like this on The Goldbergs before, with Bev getting too involved in one of her kids lives, but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t enjoy it. I really loved Sean Giambrone again this week, and just like we saw last week, Adam’s dreams of going into showbiz are becoming more and more clear, especially now that he decides to focus on writing, like he says in the last scene.

In the meantime, Erica complains that Murray doesn’t know anything about her. Pops tells him the story of how she likes Geoff, who doesn’t like her anymore. So Murray decides to help her out by telling Geoff that Erica now likes him. But he confuses Geoff with Dave Kim, which leads to some embarrassing moments for both Erica and Dave Kim when he serenades her at school, Top Gun style. Erica gets mad at Murray and because he wants to do better, he asks Pops to teach him everything there is to know about Erica. Murray wants to impress Erica with all the new stuff he has learned, including the fact that he knows she loves Geoff. When he tells her that, he doesn’t realize that Geoff is in the same room and hears everything he says. An awkward situation follows next, but Erica and Geoff talk it out. Geoff tells her that he’s very happy with Evie and Erica tells him that what her dad says wasn’t true. They both go their separate ways, but turn around and kiss.

I’ve been waiting for this storyline for forever, and I thought we would have to wait at least until the season finale, but yay, Gerica is finally happening!! I’m curious to find out how Evie will react to all this, but I guess we’ll find out about that soon enough.

I thought this was a great episode. Not only did I really love the ending because I had been waiting for it for so long, but I thought the other two storylines were good too. I liked Adam’s plot and Barry’s transformation into a punk pirate was hilarious to me too.
