Chicago Fire (S05E19) “Carry Their Legacy”

I’m not going to lie, I was a little let down with the intensity of this episode. The commercials made me think something catastrophic was going to happen to one of the main characters. I don’t mean to undermine the tragedy in this episode because it certainly was sad, but it wasn’t as epic a call as the ads made it seem.

With that said, this was one of the best episodes of the season. It perfectly balanced drama with comic relief. Not only was there a bet against which receptionist would outlast the other, but Gabby and Brett attended their mandatory retraining class in which we learned a lot about how they act in a classroom. Brett, as you might imagine, was the eager student, while Gabby was surprisingly dismissive, distracted, and cocky. But she was also smart. When we (and Brett) thought Gabby had failed her test, she passed with flying colors. I liked this segment because it strengthened their friendship and really gave us a taste of who these characters are, outside of the normal boundaries we have seen them in.

“Carry Their Legacy” was a bittersweet example of the friendships that are made within these units, and I’m glad we got to see a glimpse at another firehouse’s bond. Similarily, Casey’s support of Anna, even though she has tried to push him away, is heartwarming. I have mixed feelings about this relationship, but either way, I am interested in this relationship and excited to see how they bond together through Anna’s illness. I hope it doesn’t end sadly.
