Today it was announced that The Middle’s upcoming 9th season will be its last.
After 8 seasons, I knew this announcement would come sooner or later, but it still hit me hard when I read that my favorite show on TV right now would come to an end.
In its 8 years so far, The Middle has never been the most well-known comedy, but it has always been a solid performer for ABC. The comedy, about a middle class family in a small town in Indiana, has always been able to come up with original stories and the writers know how to perfectly balance laughter with drama.
But not only that, the amazing cast made this show even better. With Patricia Heaton and Neil Flynn playing the parents in the crazy Heck family, the show created a funny, relatable and unique couple.
And as opposed to other TV shows, The Middle also hit the jackpot when it comes to the actors playing the Heck kids. Charlie McDermott, Eden Sher and Atticus Shaffer have all improved a lot over the years and their three characters have had some great character development in 8 seasons. The Middle has done an exceptional job in letting the kids grow up their own way.
These are just some of the reasons why The Middle slowly but surely grew to be my favorite comedy on TV and one of the best shows I have ever watched. As a result, I watched the episodes over and over. And now I can recall about every storyline, I have memorized a lot of the characters’ lines and I can relate to so many things the Hecks do or say.
After hearing today’s news, I started realizing that my life would have been very different if I hadn’t been so addicted to The Middle.
- I definitely wouldn’t be as much of a TV junkie as I am today.
- I would not be writing for TV Series Hub, since The Middle is why I wanted to start writing in the first place (and the show is how the Hub’s founder and I first connected).
- And I would not have been talking with all these amazing people on Twitter for over 2 years.
I can’t do anything else besides thank the cast and crew for the 8 seasons they have given us so far.
In a statement to EW.com, the creators of the show, DeAnn Heline and Eileen Heisler, explained that they made the joint decision with the cast to end the show after season 9, to make sure they have enough time to end the show in a satisfying way the fans will enjoy.
The writers now have a year to wrap things up. And that’s exactly what The Middle deserves: a great ending to this fantastic TV show.
It’s gonna be difficult for me when the show ends its run and I will really miss the Hecks, but I’m glad we still have one more season to enjoy!
The Middle’s 9th and final season will start on Tuesday October 3rd at 8/7c on ABC.

My favorite thing about The Middle is the show’s continuity and the amount of callbacks the writers get into episodes. In the past 3 seasons I’ve been writing them down. You can find these posts on my blog here.
