Deep in the depths of hell, Eugene (Ian Colletti) and Hitler (Noah Taylor) have successfully sought refuge in the hole. Where Eugene has to live through his hell and try to resist the inevitable outcome from happening. It’s one of those damned if you do, damned if you don’t moments. It seems hopeless until Eugene finally stands up for himself, it breaks the cycle and allows them to escape through a window, which disappears when they leave the cell.
Thanks to The Grail having their hands in everything, The Saint of Killers (Graham McTavish) is back to settle a score with our dear Preacher. There is always some sort of twisted method to the madness in this show, it’s one of the reasons fans keep coming back for more.
Back stories are important and the creators of Preacher do not skimp on the little details. We are welcomed back into the past of The Saint, getting an in-depth look into his world once more. It’s a sad tale filled with misery and death, but it explains why he has become the killer he is today. And unlucky for Jesse (Dominic Cooper), the Saint has made a deal to work with The Grail.
Jesse has become a broken man after finding out that god was never there for him. It weighs heavy on his mind, and it’s only a matter of time before he gives in to the little desire that Herr Starr (Pip Torrens) has implanted into his thoughts. Instead of disappearing and leaving his friends behind, he comes back to face the world. And for a few brief moments it seems as though things have gone back to normal. But as we all know, normal is not an option in the world of Preacher.
Featherstone (Julie Ann Emery) receives an ominous call, he is on his way, and we know that he will not be exuding happiness. They don’t even know that something sinister is coming for them until it’s too late. Tulip (Ruth Negga) is the unfortunate recipient of the first blow from the very angry cowboy. She will do anything to protect herself and the ones she loves, even if it means going up against such a deadly force. She is no match for his strength and easily cuts through her.
Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) and Jesse are blissfully unaware of the danger that is lurking in the shadows. The build up to the initial confrontation leaves you on edge, and doesn’t disappoint when The Saint finally makes his way to Jesse. This time Genesis can’t save him, the fragment of Jesse’s soul has been removed from the Saint. Just before The Saint can scalp Jesse alive, help in the guise of a hell representative, comes to claim The Saint and bring him back to his eternity of damnation. Of course Herr Starr has friends of all sorts. He never wanted Jesse dead, just scared.
Tulip and Cassidy are finally brought into the fold of what has been going on behind the scenes. Herr Starr tells them everything, the fate of the world rests on Jesse’s decision to take on the role as the New Messiah, and there wouldn’t be room for them to be in his life anymore. Everything is out on the table and there are no more lies to be told. This could certainly be the end of things as we know it, I’m not sure how the characters can continue on from here. Till the end of the world may be sooner than any of them had anticipated.
Jesse finally succumbs to the thoughts inside his head. He is the only one who can take on the bigger role of god. He is the Messiah, and Herr will surely have him wrapped around his little finger.
The Season Finale of Preacher is airs on Monday, September 11th at 7/9c on AMC.
