The Deuce premieres

The Deuce is about infinitely more than the sex industry in the 1970’s it’s profiling. It’s about the sex trade, but also about the weirdness of human sexuality; there are Mafiosi gangsters, and corrupt cops, and selfish journalists, and new pornographers.
The series portrays a gritty, urban drama about the moment pornography became street legal in New York City, and the commodification of flesh became an industry.
The Deuce (slang for West 42nd Street in Midtown) operates on a clarifying principle: Sex work is work. It has labor-management issues, logistics, legal hassles, risk-reward calculations, and hierarchies. It’s exploitative and sometimes deadly in a way most jobs aren’t. But at heart, it’s pure capitalism.
Sundays at HBO.
