The series is about the trials and triumphs of one of America’s wealthiest and unhappiest families, the Gettys. Told over multiple seasons and spanning the 20th century, the drama begins in 1973 with the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III, an heir to the Getty oil fortune, by an Italian mafia.
The capricious trust fund child is unapologetically enjoying the spoils that his privileged existence yields, which, besides one of the world’s biggest fortunes, includes sex, drugs and possibly rock and roll. However, Getty III is too young to have direct access to said fortune; a situation that leads to one of the most bizarre news stories of the 20th century.
Paul arrives at Sutton Place — the historic estate of his billionaire grandfather J. Paul Getty — looking for $6,000 to pay off his debts. Though the notoriously stingy Getty takes a brief liking to his grandson, Paul is soon exiled back to Italy, where he hatches a kidnapping hoax that spirals, as such things often do, out of control.
