#SaveShadowhunters: The Hunt for a Renewal

Earlier last week Freeform’s breakout hit Shadowhunters was suddenly canceled and would wrap up the show with a two episode finale that would air including the rest of season 3 next spring. Fans were quickly heartbroken by this news, myself included being that Shadowhunters was one of the most diverse, interesting and progressive shows that are currently on air. Like many fandoms the Shadowhunters fandom are close knit bunch. With over 100K signatures the fans have rallied together to get their voices heard. You can see the petition here and sign it if you wish. Along with the petition these dedicated fans have all raised and donated a combined $6,000 to the Trevor Project, a charity that helps LGBTQ+ individuals and helps empower them too.

What makes Shadowhunters so different than other shows is how hardworking, creative, and inspiring the fans are. With over 2+Million tweets on twitter using the hashtags #SaveShadowhunters and #PickUpShadowhunters this fandom is not going to rest and will not be quieting down any time soon. The fans have also crashed the support links for major streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon.

Freeform’s reasoning behind the show’s cancellation was strictly economical but fans are finding it very hard to believe. When Shadowhunters announced they were going to have a third season it became evident that the lack of promo was going to be the downfall for this show. Although the show airs on an American network more than half of the fanbase is international. Shadowhunters is available to watch on Netflix the following day after airing on Freeform for the rest of the world. Catching the attention for more audience members is no use when the show’s junior season was limited to tweets from Freeform and Shadowhunters main social media accounts.

The cast of the show like the fans were shocked when they heard the news. There are many speculations and stories out on the web stating that Shadowhunters was geared and ready to go for a fourth season but got the rug swept from underneath them after losing funding. Everyone has the right to believe what they want but the whole truth is still out there and fans will not rest until a fourth season or proper farewell is given to the show. Shows like The Expanse and Brooklyn 99 were saved by the outcry of fans coming together to save their beloved shows so can Shadowhunters fans do the same?

Netflix had finally made a comment about the show’s cancellation too:

#Shadowhunters fans: with the second part of Season 3 & the 2-hour finale, there will be 12 more episodes coming to Netflix outside the US in 2019. We promise these will allow the creators to bring the incredible story that has touched so many of you to a satisfying conclusion.

I asked fans of the show to tell me why Shadowhunters is so important to them and here is what they said.

Em @Lostlightwoods: It has taught me to love myself for who I am and to not be ashamed of who I love. It has taught me to fight for what I believe in. It has taught me to never give up on the ones you love and to fight for the ones you love. #SaveShadowhunters #PickUpShadowhunters

@ClaryxArt: It taught me strength comes from pain of what happened to us in the past and we become better people. That badass women are powerful. That we should fight for what we want and for what’s right. That life might seem bad but it gets better

@Shadowhunt69: It taught me that women can be badasses and they don’t need men to fight their battles for them. I live by this rule every day. I work in a industry ruled by men and I make it be known I cant be messed with. Also, I’m a fiesty redhead lol!

@ElenasTrini: how GOOD it feels to finally see yourself represented on a show. both in izzy/emeraude as a latina woman and through all the lgbt+ characters as a bi woman. this type of genre is my fave and i’ve always watched shows similar to sh but it’s never felt so.. SPECIAL to me like sh

For myself this show was the light at the end of the tunnel after my mother passed away. This show has made thousands feel better about themselves, be who they truly are on the outside and inside and has a positive impact on young adults all around the world.

So there you have it folks, what are your thoughts? Please share this article and continue to use the hashtags for the fight to Save Shadowhunters.
