The Nun (2018) – Spoiler Review

The Nun is directed by Corin Hardy and stars Demian Bechir, Taissa Farmiga and Jonas Bloquet. Who are investigating a suicide from a nun at an abbey in Romania and together they unlock the order’s unholy secret.

When a horror movie from the same universe from The Conjuring is announced, of course I got quite excited. I really like both Conjuring movies, so I really thought The Nun could be some kind of game changer. Unfortunately The Nun is just another disposable horror movie.

The performances from everyone are actually quite good. There’s not much wrong I can say from the acting.

Some of the scenes are really good. The opening scene is really good, and it really introduces the monster Valak in a great way, unfortunately the rest of the movie doesn’t go the same way. The scene in the abby where all the nuns are praying, to keep Valak away, is a very good scene and my favorite.

The Nun essentially feels like a 96 minute game of peek-a-boo. There is only generic jump scares, where the camera moves away from the character, then comes back, only for something to be behind it. And those kind of scenes are what make the movie. It was really disappointing, that they decided to go that route. Instead of filling the movie with great, terrifying scenes like in the Conjuring movies.

The movie loses a bit of it’s own logic. The big twist that all the nuns in the abby are already dead, and are simply visions from Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) doesn’t make a lot of sense. Simply for the fact that one of the nuns actually touched Sister Irene. So, they couldn’t be simply visions, if they could actually touch her.

Final Thoughts

If you want to go watch a horror movie where things just pop out, then this is the movie for you. If you are easily scared, and don’t really care for story or originality, then this is the movie for you. Because other then some good scenes and good performances from the main cast, this movie doesn’t have much going for it.
