Two weeks ago Mayans MC premiered on FX and my Tuesday nights are once again occupied with Kurt Sutter’s genius mind come to life. The wait for this show was a long one, but well worth it. The characters are relatable and wonderfully complex and needless to say, I was hooked from the first episode.
Episode one set the stage for the season with drama, flashbacks, an explosion and even a Gemma (Katey Sagal) sighting. I am glad that Mayans has flashbacks (I just love a good flashback) that are used to explain backstory. History has always been important in the MC world. The MC seems to be in deep with the Cartel, which doesn’t sit well with all of the members. Our favorite Prospect EZ Reyes (JD Pardo) learns first hand what his brother Angel (Clayton Cardenas) and a few others are willing to do in order to get away from the Cartel.
Episode two opened with the hold up of the wife of Miguel Galindo, Emily Thomas (Sarah Bolger), where we saw some of her people die and her son taken. This was done specifically for a power play by the rebels who have suffered at the hands of the Cartel. These rebels mean business and the leader Adelita (Carla Baratta) is smart. The women of Mayans are tough and play major roles in the storyline. I have always appreciated how important the women are in the MC universe.
Looks like Sutter’s magic is back! I look forward to seeing more of the Mayans world and with the premiere episode’s numbers, it appears that I am not the only one.
Mayans MC airs Tuesday nights at 9pm Central on FX
