Alright guys and gals, readers of all ages, we have a great film to review for you all tonight and it was a really good film to add in there! The film that I will be reviewing tonight is The Girl in the Spider’s Web: A New Dragon Tattoo Story; so lets get to this review! Also a little note: Don’t worry guys and gals I wont spoil the movie for all of you!
Okay so for those of you who never watched the first film which was titled ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ I recommend you all to watch that film before seeing this film, otherwise you will be confused when watching this film. For those that don’t know, this film is based off a series of books that are known to readers as ‘The Dragon Tattoo Series’ so far the book series has a total of five books, three written by the original author which that author’s name is Steig Larsson and two written by another author that author’s name is David Lagercrantz. This movie’s book was written by David Lagercrantz, who follows after the events that happened in ‘The Girl who kicked the Hornets Nest’ but a lot of you probably know that bit of information.
In this film, it’s been two years since the events that happened in ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ film, where Lisbeth (Claire Foy) has started becoming this “avenging angel” to women who are being beaten and abused by either their husbands, boyfriends, or even if it’s a striper who needs help with a guy who keeps harassing her. It’s an interesting way to be able to help people, but when no one else will then I guess it’s a good thing that we have an avenging angel out there to help those kind of women. Honestly I’ve always loved the character Lisbeth, especially in the film ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ which back then the character was played by Rooney Mara, and Rooney Mara did a great job as the main character by bringing her to life for American films, it’s still a shame that she chose not to stay with the character but it’s also understandable because of schedule issues or just taking way too long with a really good script the actor’s and actresses get bored waiting around just like how a lot of us get bored waiting around for some of the movies to be made. But luckily we had Claire Foy pick up the role which I will admit that I did have some major doubts that she would be able to pull off the role especially with how violent and not so merciful the character Lisbeth ends up being in this book, but it was actually a really good iteration of the character that Foy was able to bring to screen.
We also saw that Mikel Blomkvist (Sverrir Gudnason) was doing what he does best, write articles for the paper, and during those two years since he hasn’t been doing too good for news stories. Until Lisbeth returns with a possible incredible story that he could do on Lisbeth, but will he? You have to go see the movie in order to find out! Now the last time that we saw Mikel was in the film ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ and he was being played by Daniel Craig at the time. Now I know that a lot of people didn’t like Daniel Craig in the role of Mikel, their excuses where either it didn’t make sense or it was just a wrong role for the guy. Now I know why people would say that because Daniel Craig is a lot older than Rooney Mara and the two character’s they played did have lots of sex in that film, but if you don’t look at the age difference and look at the performance then Daniel Craig would seem like a good choice for the role and did a good job in the film. Now the new actor who plays Mikel; Sverrir Gudnason, I’ve never seen him in any other movies, this is the first time I’m seeing him in a film, but he played the role of Mikel really well, I was impressed by him and Claire Foy in their appearances as the main duo characters of the series.
Now the villain of the movie, is a pretty classic kind of bad guy or I should say bad woman; but if you’ve seen the trailers of the film then you know that the villainous character is Lisbeth’s sister Camillia Salandar (Sylvia Hoeks) who grew up with Lisbeth when they were with their father at a young age. And as we all know eventually Lisbeth became a ward of the country. The villain of the story however, was performed really well! I’ve never seen Sylvia Hoeks play in a role on a film before, but she did a really good job as the evil sister of the film. I don’t remember all that much about what happened in the book, but one thing I do remember is that Camillia was a lady to not mess with, she became as deadly as her father had always hoped for both her and Lisbeth to become in their adult lives to keep the family business alive and going. But we also see Camillia being kinda broken or lost in the film as well, as if the reason why she’s been doing all these horrible crimes is to find out one answer that even her own sister doesn’t know how to answer. If you want to find out the answer, you gotta go see the film!
The film this time around was directed by Fede Alvarez, whose the director who brought us the films Don’t Breathe and Evil Dead remake; I have to be honest he did this film really well, it actually makes you feel like your actually reading the book kind of way which I don’t think that’s ever been said about a director before, he brings the book literally to life before our eyes. Compared to what David Fincher did with directing ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ it’s definitely an improvement like how sequels or continuations should be in a book based film series! So for that I would definitely say that he did a great and fantastic job with the film!
The film definitely has a lot of twists and turns, it’s quite intense, if you all saw the first film or read the books then you know how intense these stories can be so you can take my word on it being quite intense in some parts at least. The film will definitely keep you hooked from start to finish and I definitely recommend you all to see this film!
The Girl in the Spider’s Web: A New Dragon Tattoo Story is now out in theaters so go see this film!
