The Goldbergs (S06E10) “Yippee Ki Yay Melon Farmer”
Against his mother’s wishes, now that Barry is engaged to Lainey he is able to celebrate Christmas. However Lainey and her dad aren’t big on the holiday because around that time Lainey’s mom walked out on them. Barry is disappointed but finds a way to have a great Christmas anyway by using some reverse psychology on his mom. Beverly goes all out for the 8 nights of Hanukkah, just to make sure her schmoo will be with her during the holidays. Every night is bigger than the night before and Bill can hardly believe that this is how Hanukkah is celebrated. However by the time night 8 comes, Beverly breaks down and the truth comes out: Bill never wanted to celebrate Christmas and Beverly never does this much for Hanukkah. Bill is disappointed because he only wanted to be part of a family, celebrating a holiday. To make up to Bill and Lainey, Beverly and Barry throw them a big Christmas party together with Erica and Geoff (and the Kremps’ decorations).
Of course, Marvin comes over to The Goldberg house for the holidays as well. He tells Adam he just recently became a TV star and they come up with a plan to become major players in the industry together. Adam has just discovered his favorite Christmas movie of all time: Die Hard, and wants to make his own version of it with Marvin. For once, Murray is actually believing in his brother, until he sees what Marvin’s big break is: he was on an episode of COPS. After all Murray’s positivity, Murray now tells Marvin that the movie isn’t a good idea at all, and as usual Marvin bails. However, Marv comes through at the end making sure the trailer of his and Adam’s version of Die Hard is shown in the movie theater.
I got through this entire recap without mentioning the word ‘melon’, which is pretty incredible considering the best scene was about melons. Cantaloupes and Honeydews. Or melon farmers. Or melon and grape farmers. Anyway, the cold open about this was hilarious. The dialogue between Pops and Murray was amazing and the way both talked about the melons was weirdly passionate. The conversation later between Murray and Adam about taking a melon to the movie theater as a snack was pretty crazy too. Talking about movie snacks, I love how thrifty Murray is (taking a melon instead of buying popcorn), especially after seeing all the things Bev got for their 8 days of Hanukkah (including a popcorn machine…).
Marvin’s return was great as always. I love his relationship with Adam and I’m glad that he actually finished what he started and came through for his nephew. And I’m happy Murray was there to see it and was being a supportive brother, something Marvin apparently needs to succeed. Let’s just hope he gets his act together and won’t appear on COPS or The People’s Court anymore.
The other storyline this episode was pretty crazy as well. Barry’s 12 days of Christmas? Wow, just wow. Beverly’s 8 days of Hanukkah? Absolutely insane. But hey, in the end both the Lewises and the Goldbergs come together to celebrate Christmas. “Because even though you’ve lost some family on Christmas, now you’ve gained a whole new one”. A meaningful and happy ending to a great holiday episode.
Now I want your thoughts. Is Die Hard a Christmas movie, yes or no??
The Goldbergs will be back on January 9th, at 8/7c on ABC. And don’t forget: The Goldbergs’ spinoff Schooled will premiere right after this new episode of The Goldbergs!!
