A Gingerbread Romance – Richard Gabai was a Director in the movie

Welcome to TV Series Hub. As a veteran in the industry, how do you reflect on your career so far?

With gratitude.  I am the luckiest guy I know – to be making a living working in the arts for all of these years is a blessing.

What have been the best and worst moments for you so far?

Every day on set or in the studio feels good to me.  Also meeting, working with and becoming friends with some of my heroes is a real treat. I can’t really complain about anything.   Of course there are challenges and disappointments, but few and far between. I make movies, act, and play guitar for a living – what could be bad?

How does acting help you with being a Director and vice versa?

Acting helps me direct because I understand what my actors are going through.  I love actors and I enjoy that part of my job. I feel what they feel and thereby do my best to create an environment where everyone can do their best work.  The same holds true when I have an acting job. I understand that the director needs me to do my job – 90% of which is hitting my marks without looking at my feet and knowing my lines.    That sounds funny but it’s true, and certainly not easy!

Christmas movies are a bit out of your usual work. Was it challenging and how did you overcome it?

I love Christmas movies, so while it’s true that I’d never directed one before, I was ready.  To make sure I understood the Hallmark brand I watched several of their Christmas movies before I started production on “A Gingerbread Romance.”

Since the movie was released, how has the response been?

Thankfully the reaction has been fantastic.  Hallmark is a great brand with a dedicated audience and I didn’t want to disappoint either of them!

How do you judge a movie’s success?

At the end of the day we are in show business, with an emphasis on business; so if the customer is happy I consider the movie a success.

“A Gingerbread Romance” – the movie which was released on the 16th of December 2018. How does the title reflect the movie?

The plot revolves around a giant gingerbread house building contest!

In brief, how would you describe the movie to our audience and why should they be seeing it?

It will definitely put you in the holiday spirit! Tia Mowry-Hardrict plays Taylor, an architect who has been tasked with representing her firm in the city-wide giant gingerbread house competition.  She gets teamed up with single dad Adam, a baker played by Duane Henry. They don’t get along at all at first, so it is so fun to watch their relationship develop, and kick Christmas into hyper-drive!

What are the upcoming projects you are working on?

There are quite a few projects that I’m excited about, but I don’t like to talk about things until I have a start date.

With so many different roles behind and in-front of the camera, what keeps you motivated and going after such an illustrious career?

Well thank you for the compliment.  I sincerely love what I do so it’s easy to stay motivated.  I also have three kids to put through college, so there’s that!  Seriously, I think the fact that I’ve been lucky enough to do so many different things keeps everything fresh.  Last year I recorded and released an album for the first time in years – so for a few months I was a recording artist, then back on to a movie.  It’s that old saying, something about doing what you love and never working a day in your life? Hey, give my “Double Life” album a listen, it’s on all the streaming platforms, and I’m very proud of it!
