This review contains some major spoilers for the tenth episode of Manifest entitled Crosswinds. (as well as some for all other episodes).
Well, Manifesters, December felt like the longest month ever but Monday night Manifest came back with a roar! There was a new Calling, Autumn (Guest star, Shirley Rumierk) switched sides (and was forcibly brought back), Ben (Josh Dallas) found two new allies in unlikely corners and Michaela’s (Melissa Roxburgh) relationship with Jared (J.R. Ramirez) returned to a familiar level that is going to have consequences for them both down the road.
Autumn Changes Her Colors…
While helping Saanvi (Parveen Kaur) and Fiona (guest star, Francesca Faridany) care for the previously missing 828 passengers, Autumn is shown still being under the thumb of the mysterious Major. She, however, decides that she is done going against her fellow passengers after getting to know some of the others and caring for those who are now in a coma-like state from the experiments that happened to them while they were detained by the secretive entity from the time their plane returned. She tosses the phone that she was given into the ocean. However, when she was out shopping she came across another associate of the Major. He gave him another phone and let her know that the Major wanted to talk to her. When it comes to this, she needs to trust in the people that she has gotten to know and obviously care about. Autumn needs to talk to her fellow passengers and let them know that they are in more danger than they know.
Ben’s Unlikely Allies
Ben was having issues not only with his home life but in his “post 828” life as well. While living with Michaela he is constantly trying to keep in contact with his kids, Olive (Luna Blaise) and Cal (Jack Messina), he is also trying to unravel all of the mysteries that are putting his family at risk. Olive uses this opportunity to try and get her mother, Grace (Athena Karkanis) back together with Danny (guest star, Daniel Sunjata) while Cal is doing all he can to keep his family together.
Ben meets Aaron Glover (guest star, Marquis Rodriguez) who runs a podcast about the various mysteries that are surrounding the returning plane and its passengers. Ben at first doesn’t want to have anything to do with anything that seemingly exploits what has been happening to himself and his fellow passengers. However, desperate times come with desperate measures and he goes on Aaron’s show only to tell him to wait to release it until they have more information and his family is safe.
Ben also makes an unusual friend of NSA agent Powell (guest star, Tim Moriarty) who he first comes into contact with at Vance’s funeral. After a hostile interaction with him, Ben goes back to see him again to let him know what he knows about the Major and the role that she plays in the disappearance of the passengers as well as Vance’s death. He uses Powell’s friendship with Vance to his advantage, asking him to think about what his former boss would do in the same situation. While Powell, isn’t completely convinced that he can trust Ben and the others, he seems to be making some steps in the right direction.
New Calling…Same Michaela
Michaela visits her mother’s grave and comes to the realization that she wants to have her life back with everything that it entails. While at the beach house, she and Saanvi are trying to figure out what is going on with the kidnapped passengers. Michaela touches one of them and it not only triggers an all too real Calling, but it also wakes the man up. Michaela notices that this Calling is different than the rest, in that instead of just seeing or hearing things, she says that she feels that she was literally transported to another place. While trying to talk to the newly awakened passenger, Michaela and Saanvi find out that Paul (guest star, Kerry Malloy) doesn’t remember anything about his previous life, not even his name. Michaela feels a special connection to him because, like her, Paul’s significant other didn’t show up at the hangar when they were released.
Michaela and Jared do a bit of digging to find out that Paul wasn’t as nice of a guy as they had thought. They find his wife, Helen (Guest star, Frances Eve) at a motel hiding from Paul because she was afraid that now her abusive husband was back that her life was in danger. She calls Paul a wrecking ball into her life and Michaela feels that she is doing just that to Jared’s life with Lourdes (guest star, Victoria Cartagena). She tries to distance herself from Jared, telling him that she wants to ask for a new partner.
Jared, however, confesses to her that she has always been the one and that she is his soulmate. The two of them get intimate, however, they are both seemingly having issues with the infidelity as shown by their reactions. So, are we happy about his #Jachela fans? Or do we wish they had waited until things were resolved with Lourdes?
Questions for this week:
Who is the person looking for Michaela? Is it Matt Long’s Zeke, who has been reported as a new character that will completely change the show’s mythology.
Who is the Major and is Autumn going to keep working for her or will her conscience get the better of her again?
Is Vance alive? I keep hoping that we have not seen the last of our rogue NSA agent, but only time will tell.
