Good evening everyone! Tonight I have a special treat for you; an interview with the incomparable Rena Owen! We talk about her love for the industry, dream projects, and of course the new season of Siren. Below are some of the questions I was able to ask during our phenomenal conversation. I’m very excited to bring this to you guys, so I hope you enjoy reading as much as I enjoyed writing it!
Are you drawn to any particular type of role?
”No, not really, I prefer interesting characters. Take Helen for example, she’s an OG. She knows what’s what and doesn’t let anyone mess with her.”
Would you say that you and Helen are similar?
”In a few ways yes. Every actor brings a bit of themselves to each role, so there will always be a few similarities. We are both kinda outsiders, a bit weird and humorous. I really enjoy Helen, she’s fun to play.”
How has the fan reaction been to Helen?
”The fan have been so supportive. They really love Helen, and Ryn of course. It’s a relief to have so much positive feedback, I feel very blessed to be able to portray Helen on such a great show. The fan base is really awesome. We all feel very blessed that the show is so popular.”
What drew you to Siren?
“Initially it was a call from my agent about an audition. He told me they are only auditioning a limited amount of people for each role, and that they are very interested in having me read. I go in for the audition, and my agent insists I’ll be getting a call back. I had doubts; but sure enough I get the call that I landed it.
I think the world is very unique, as it deals with a lot of important current issues that aren’t always in the forefront. Our oceans are important to the ecosystem. That’s why the merpeople are coming to the surface. Over fishing is destroying their home, which is what leads to Donna getting captured at the beginning of season 1.”
Is there anything from behind the scenes that sticks out in your mind?
“Not particularly, but we are all very close. We try to get together once a month for a potluck or dinner, we are a tight little family. It’s hard when we aren’t always on set together, but we try to spend the holidays together. We don’t have a lot of time to shoot too, so we are very head-down-butt-up-nose-to-the-grindstone when we are working. I’m kinda the old lady in the group, but we still have a lot of fun. We are very blessed to be able to work on this show.”
Do you like being behind the camera or in front of it more?
“I truly enjoy both. I love being creative, so as long as I have passion and believe in the project I’m fine on either side. Being behind the camera is also a lot lower maintenance.”
Do you have any passion projects you’d like to see made?
“I’d love to be able to make ‘Behind the Tattoed Face.’ It’s a sweeping epic that has a very rich world, and is being lovingly referred to as ‘The Black Panther from down under’. Sometimes it takes a long time to get a project made, but that’s the one I’m dying to make.”
What can we expect from season 2 of Siren?
“Oh boy it’s going to be a good one. Helen gets a whole new storyline and it’s juicy. Between the merpeople coming to land and merpeople being wrangled, Helen has a revelation that she learns along with the audience. There’s is a lot of juicy drama in store.”
Are there any franchises that you would love to be a part of?
“I’d really love to be Lady M in the James Bond universe. Dame Judi Dench is brilliant but with her retiring I’d really love a shot at that part.
I think it would be pretty cool to be in a Marvel movie, or even return to the Star Wars universe. I think they’d be a lot of fun.”
Lastly, do you have any advice for those aspiring to be in the industry?
“Perseverance. There are careers out there that are always going to be relevant; the food industry and the medicine industry. If you want something guaranteed than pick a job in one of those industries, but if in your heart of hearts acting is what you long for, be relentless in your pursuit. Do not let anyone else deter you and put 100% of yourself into the work. It’s a very tough industry, even I have considered stopping more than once. You just have to be persistent and relentless.”
Thank you you so much for reading! It was truly an honour to be able to interview such a fantastic woman in the industry. I know I am looking forward to everything coming Helen’s way on this season of Siren, as well as all of Rena’s future projects.
