There has been a proverbial “elephant” in the room after the departure of George Eads. Who would take his place? I think that the minds behind MacGyver put a lot of thought into introducing a new character. Desi (Levy Tran), is an undeniable force of nature, and she comes out swinging from the get-go. She may not be Jack, but that might not be such a bad thing. Tasked with keeping the team alive, she’s certainly going to have her hands full.
It’s going to be an adjustment to the team, especially when Desi tracks each of them down, just to prove how exposed they really are. There may be flaws in their security, but none of them are helpless. Desi seems to owe Jack a debt, and this is her way of paying it forward. She may come off as prickly and guarded, but she is willing to put herself on the line for the greater good. Exposing all the good, the bad and the ugly sides of her. Trust isn’t going to come easy.
The team must push their thoughts and feelings away, as they are onto another important mission. Aiding Maria (Presilah Nunez) and her partner, a gun-sniffing dog, Cody. Having the opportunity to stop some very dangerous smugglers from releasing further destruction. Unfortunately, an ATF agent has a double life, aiding this dangerous cause. It seems like things will go according to plan until they don’t. But that seems to come hand in hand with the world of MacGyver. Expect the unexpected, and be prepared to improvise.
With Cody running scared from the inevitable fight, they soon find out that he was the target all along. Under pressure with nothing to go on, isn’t going to stop any of them. With the ingenuity from MacGyver (Lucas Till) and Riley’s (Tristin Mays) confidence, they are able to put their heads together to find Cody, before it’s too late. Where is Desi in all of this? It seems that not only is she a skilled fighter, but she is also quite brilliant. Nothing is getting past her.
Riley isn’t going to take it easy on Desi, they have been burned many times before. I think that they are finally learning that everyone has a past and secrets. The protective nature Riley holds over her family is endearing. She isn’t going to miss a beat, and there isn’t much that she doesn’t know. It seems that Desi may have her demons, but they weren’t quite what was expected. She has a good heart, and a good head on her shoulders. But one can never be too careful.
There is no impossibility that cannot be solved, and no task too great. Even when a whole warehouse is on fire. Some plans, are just to run in and take risks to save lives. When Desi and Cody find themselves surrounded by flames, the scenes get tense. Being in good hands though, with MacGyver on the case, ready to save the day again.
There seems to be an organic connection when it comes to the newcomer, she is not just another side character, there is something profoundly unique about her. She seems to be able to mesh well with everyone else. Although she’s not quite ready to hang around the fire and share a beer, I have a feeling she will get there eventually.
Oh, and if you were ever wondering, Matty (Meredith Eaton) will always be one step ahead of them all.
Welcome to the team Desi, you’re going to fit in quite nicely.
