It seemed like a new episode of MacGyver would never come for fans, after being preempted last week, viewers finally got their fill. The last time we left the team, their world’s had been significantly altered by the release of their very personal information, for all the underbelly of the world to see. Spoilers Ahead.
Time stands still for no one
Riley (Tristin Mays) has been running herself ragged trying to find something, anything, to help their current plight. If anyone is able to find that very delicate information, she is the one up to the task. The writers have allowed us to move forward in this journey and watch each character evolve in their own right. It allows fans to connect to the characters and the actors who portray them.
Even though Phoenix is dealing with a data breach, that doesn’t mean it isn’t business as usual. The chaos in the world doesn’t stop, and the next mission finds MacGyver (Lucas Till), Desi (Levy Tran), and Riley in Greenland, trying to solve a real-life mystery. Karl, who is a lone worker in a remote International Seed Bank, is missing. As of yet, there hasn’t been a mystery MacGyver cannot unravel, and this one is no different.
Problem-solving bodes well for the trio, especially with MacGyver’s out-of-the-box thinking and Desi’s ability to roll with the punches, both figuratively and literally. When their missing worker turns up dead, the end up unraveling a tale of a desperate man, just trying to right the wrongs of his family’s death. With an international incident looming overhead, they must track down the grief-stricken man, Jules (Carlos Leal), before some potentially dangerous seeds (from North Korea of all places) fall into the wrong hands.
Desperate times, call for desperate measures
Grief strikes people in different ways, some delve into dark, unassuming territory in order to make things right again. Jules, lost everything he had ever loved because he did the right thing. His testimony sent a European’s crime bosses man, to jail. This came at a cost, the life of Jule’s family, and almost his own. MacGyver and the team are able to track his movements and stop him before he becomes the monster he has been hunting.
Desi hasn’t been part of the show for long, but there is something riveting about her performance and the way she meshes with the team. She is on the outside but is able to see things and perceive things differently. Her cold nature and disconnect will end up being an advantage in the episodes to come. Deep down, she does care, but she has been through her own personal hell. With Riley and Desi around, MacGyver can’t hide his private thoughts in for long.
There are no secrets that time does not reveal
Bozer (Justin Hires) is on a special, secret assignment in this episode, as per MacGyver’s request. Oversight (Donovan Tate), has been acting more secretive than usual. Missing lunch dates, altering plans and generally acting suspiciously. The relationship between him and MacGyver has just reached a good, healthy point. There should be no more secrets between the two. Bozer and Leanna (Reign Edwards) team up, and uncover the shocking and heartbreaking truth behind Oversight’s secrecy. He has cancer.
This news is a blow to MacGyver since this is one thing he can’t fix. With the time Oversight has left, he wishes to spend it with his son. This episode certainly pulls at the heartstrings, as fans realize that loss is imminent as the season progresses. There will be no time to process these events, because they are still in danger, and the world will not pause for personal breakdowns.
The delicate balance is about to be broken, and the team will need each other more than ever before. Dark times are coming.
Yet again, we are thrown into the waiting game.
