Hello, Riverdale fans! Got your voice all warmed up? ‘Cause this episode is a musical extravaganza! Here’s my latest review of season 3, episode 16 entitled ‘Chapter Fifty-One: Big Fun’
let’s sing some songs
The episode starts in Principal Weatherbee’s (Peter Bryant) office. Kevin (Casey Cott) is explaining why Heathers is a good choice for a musical. He breaks into song and gets the whole school involved. Everyone is singing.
At rehearsal, Kevin tells the cast he is now co-directing the show with Evelyn (Zoe De Grand Maison). Betty (Lil Reinhart) is not happy about this and suspects Evelyn has ulterior motives. Kevin also brings in Toni (Vanessa Morgan) as the show choreographer. Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) is angry. Another song breaks out. It almost seems like a dance-off of sorts between Cheryl and Toni. Unsurprisingly, Cheryl comes out on top.
Betty confronts Evelyn about being co-director. She accuses Evelyn as using the musical as an excuse to recruit more people for the farm. In response, Evelyn invites the whole cast to a party at the farm headquarters and asks them to come in costume.
At the Jones’ place, FP (Skeet Ulrich) tells the family that their old trailer and some pharmaceuticals were stolen. Jughead (Cole Sprouse) is pretty upset about this news and plans to go find his old homestead. Thing s aren’t going well for Veronica (Camilla Mendes) either as she finds out that her parents are separating. Hiram (Mark Consuelos) found out that Hermione (Marisol Nichols) tried to get rid of the drugs.
At the cast party, the gang breaks into another song. Toni and her gang crash the party, much to Cheryl’s dismay. At rehearsal the next day, things get personal. Kevin reveals that he’s been seeing the ghost of Midge. Everyone finds out about Josie (Ashleigh Murray) and Archie (K.J Apa) dating. Veronica spills the beans about her parent’s separation. After rehearsal, Archie and Josie talk. He suggests they make their relationship official. Josie turns him down.
Veronica and Reggie (Charles Melton) have a talk. They had hooked up at the cast party the evening before. Now that the news about her parents is out, Reggie says he can’t be with her right now. There’s another confrontation between Cheryl and Toni. Toni breaks into song. She takes Sweet Pea (Jordon Connor) and Peaches (Bernadette Beck) onto the stage, intending to hook up with them. Luckily, Toni comes to her senses and runs off.
what’s going on at the farm?
Jughead sends out the Serpents to try and find his old trailer. Betty goes to the farm headquarters, where Evelyn is holding a private rehearsal. Betty hears the singing and observes what looks very much like a religious ceremony. She takes pictures.
Josie meets Archie at his boxing gym. They talk. Another song breaks out. Looks like Archie and Josie have made things official after all. Betty takes her pictures to Weatherbee. He doesn’t believe any of her claims, and in fact, praises Evelyn and her father. This leads Betty to believe that Weatherbee may be part of the farm, albeit in some small way. Toni offers Cheryl and olive branch. Cheryl becomes emotional, and they sing another song.
Betty meets up with Jughead. He tells her his trailer has become a drug lab. They lament their current circumstances and sing some more about being “normal”. Afterward, Betty suggests to Jughead to let go of the trailer. Veronica talks to her father in a futile effort to keep the family from splitting. Hiram knows that Hermione had tried to have him killed twice. He tells Veronica there is no family anymore. Another song cues up.
It’s the opening night for the musical. Jughead and Betty are late because they burned down his old trailer. The whole gang sings the final song, which sounds like almost a direct metaphor of what was happening in Riverdale. They wanted things to get better.
The episode ends with Evelyn’s father clapping, and the rest of the audience joining in.
Gotta love those musical episodes! Actually, I thought it was a nice break from all the drama and craziness. I am super excited that we are finally meeting Evelyn’s father. His arrival makes me feel like some big stuff is about to go down in Riverdale. I hope the gang can handle it.
Overall I give this episode an 8/10
