THE GODS AMONG US
Season 2 kicks off after the electrifying showdown between Mr Wednesday (who we now know is Odin, All-Father, Lord of Asgard) and the New Gods. All this took place at Easter’s house. Watch the video below for a quick recap of Season 1 and who the characters are.
The episode starts with Tech Boy (Bruce Langley) speeding through Black Briar’s golf course to their parking garage. They stop in front of what seems like a mechanical door, and Mr World (Crispin Glover) tells him to show the camera a paperclip. After a brief conversation with The Caretaker (Eric Peterson), Mr World orders Tech Boy to stop his irritational thinking and threats and find the new Media. While Shadow (Ricky Whittle), Wednesday (Ian McShane), Laura (Emily Browning) and Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber) make their way to the House on the Rock.
Mr Ibis (Demore Barnes) then narrates the story of the origin of the House on the Rock. Bilquis (Yetide Badaki), Salim (Omid Abtahi) and the Jinn (Mousa Kraish) meet each other first. And being the Goddess of Love, can sense the tension between the guys. A quick cutscene to a lady cleaning a motel and across the TV we see a spider crawl, of course, this spider is Nancy (Orlando Jones). Allowing us to wonder who this lady is. Back at the House on the Rock, Nancy meets Wednesday, Shadow, Sweeney and Laura and tells Wednesday that Easter isn’t coming and he knows why. Inside, Wednesday speaks to the Jinn and asks how many showed up and he responds saying a dozen, no more. He also tells Wednesday of Bilquis who wasn’t invited and only allows Shadow to follow Nancy and Wednesday to the meeting. They start walking through the place, Wednesday peels off to meet with Zoraya Verchenyaya (Cloris Leachman) and Czernoborg (Peter Stormare) shows up too. Wednesday meets up with them again and tells a story while they walk towards the Carousel Room. Once inside, Shadow can immediately feel this place is something different, magical even. He joins Bilquis, Nancy and Wednesday on the carousel as they make their way into Wednesday’s head. Inside Bilquis meets him on the beach and they make their way to the Hall of the Gods. This moment, this experience, it’s truly amazing, it feels God-like.
After the meeting of the Gods, they all show up in a diner. But while they were at the House on the Rock, Mr World asks for the eyes of Argus to see his enemies and make the connections. Shadow talks to Czernobog and Nancy and they are their usual smug, arrogant selves. Shadow wants to know more but they insult him instead of helping him. After sharing a moment with Laura, Bilquis leaves the diner. We see her walking out via the screen at Black-Briar and realise she is working with them. Mr World picks up the phone and tells the person on the other end to recover the package. Shadow and Laura begin to talk, begin to have a real conversation but he gets pulled away by Wednesday. Talking to Sweeney, Laura realizes that he isn’t her man anymore.
Back at Black-Briar, Mr World sends a message to Mr Town requesting a strike package and execution of target. During this, Mr World confesses that sometimes the old way are the best. With his talking in the background, we see a sniper being set up, loaded and ready to shoot. Continuing with Mr World voice-over about himself, pain and sacrifice. And then the first shot goes off. And the second. And the third. Shots are fired into the diner to kill everyone inside, as is the inscription on shell casing – Deus mortuorum, God killer. Jinn keeps Salim on the ground, Mama-Ji (Sakina Jaffrey) eye’s filled with rage, Shadow tackles Laura to the ground, people are being killed and Wednesday stands in shock of what’s happening around him. Shadow sneaks out back and fights with the gunman and knocks to the ground before being sucked up into some aircraft.
The shooting stops and everyone looks around to see what has happened to them. The shock expressed on Mama-Ji’s face tells us that something bad has happened. Then Wednesday finds Zorya lying on the floor, he takes her into his arms to see that she’s been shot in the chest. Czernobog kneels next to them and takes her hand. With her last words, she says that Wednesday is a bad good man and “I do not… wish to… say goodbye.” As she passes, Czernobog goes off with a monologue cursing whoever has done this with the Czernobog curse. Wednesday shouts out “Is this what it takes.” With everyone standing in shock of Zorya’s passing, Laura runs outside and sees Shadow’s light moving further and further away.
Thanks for reading the recap for Season 2 Episode 1 of American Gods. If season 2 is anything like season 1, we sure are going to be in for a treat. There is just soo much to look forward to and so much more to know and understand. We were introduced to more Old Gods in this episode, evident in The Hall of The Gods. One we shall see more of is Mama-Ji, the Hindu Goddess of War. Honestly, the scene of the Hall of The Gods, it is my favourite scene of the series so far. Pure magic. I’ve added a video of this meeting below.
