Hello, Riverdale fans! I apologize for the late review. I was at comic con all weekend and have only now just gotten time to write the latest review. Without further ado, I present the review for the episode ‘Fear The Reaper’.
wanna play a game?
After a brief recap, the show opens with Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and FP (Skeet Ulrich) receiving a note regarding JB (Trinity Linkins). Archie (KJ Apa) and the others from the boxing tournament are at the hospital. Archie’s opponent, Ronson is dead. Elio (Julian Haig) blames Archie for his death, and tells him to ‘lawyer up’. The Jones family interrogate Kurtz (Jonathan Whitesell) and after much deliberation, decide to play a game of G&G to try and get Jellybean back.
Archie feels responsible for Ronson’s death, even though it wasn’t his fault. Betty (Lil Reinhart) goes to Hiram (Mark Consuelos) to ask for her father to be transferred to the Southside Prison. She also hopes he can get better accommodations. Hiram says he’ll see what he can do.
Mad Dog (Eli Goree) pays a visit to Archie and tried to warn him that the police had raided Elio’s gym for drugs. Archie had the stuff Mad Dog gave him in his locker at El Royale. They go to grab it and are stopped at the door by the police. They arrest Archie.
knowledge is power
The game the Joneses are playing is turning dangerous very quickly. A card is drawn and Gladys (Gina Gershon) is forced to reveal her secret about being the new drug lord in Riverdale. FP is furious. Josie (Ashleigh Murray) calls her father and invites him to one of her shows at La Bonne Nuit. People are talking to Betty about Alice’s (Madchen Amick) impending marriage to Edgar Evernever (Chad Michael Murray).
Veronica (Camilla Mendes) posts Archie’s bail. Elio is running a smear campaign against Archie. People are not happy with him. At school, they are getting vaccinations. Evelyn (Zoe De Grand Maison) says she has a not exempting her from getting her shots. The Farm is totally anti-vax. Betty gets the idea to check Evelyn’s school records. She sneaks in at night and takes pictures of the files to go through later.
The Jones’ family gets a new quest. They have to rob Pop’s. Naturally, FP is against this, but they have no choice. After the effective smear campaign against Archie, he is determined to find a way to help Ronson’s family. Betty does some digging and gets a shocking discovery. Evelyn is much older than she seems to be. For the last ten years, she has been posing as a junior. Most likely to recruit teenagers into the farm.
Josie meets her father at Pop’s. She asks to join him on tour. The Jones’ rob the chocolate shop. Pop shoots FP, and they barely manage to get out of there in one piece.
Armed with the new knowledge of Evelyn, Betty is determined to save her twin niece and nephew from the farm. She goes to Penelope (Nathalie Boltt) and asks her to adopt the twins. Unfortunately, Penelope is only able to get Dagwood back. Juniper is still in danger.
Elio comes to Archie with a proposal. He wants to train Archie as the ‘Riverdale Reaper’. Archie refuses. The Jones family is feeling the pinch of the latest quest. They are well and truly screwed. They receive another quest.
At La Bonne Nuit, Josie finds out that her father hadn’t picked up his ticket and was not coming to her set. She is devastated but determined to perform regardless. Kurtz takes Jughead and Gladys to the serpent’s den. It is there they are reunited with none other than Penny Peabody (Brit Morgan). Penny and Gladys prepare to do battle with swords. Gladys eventually emerges triumphant, but she is badly injured. Josie performs her set.
the ultimate plot twist
The pinnacle of the episode is revealed when Betty gets a call from the social worker. She had done some digging and found that Evelyn is not Edgar’s daughter, but his wife.
After her set, Josie meets with her father. He was impressed with her tenacity to perform even when he wasn’t coming. He tells her she can come on tour with him. Archie goes to see Ronson’s sister. He gives her the prize money from the tournament and the donation money from the benefit at La Bonne Nuit. She is grateful.
Betty asks Toni (Vanessa Morgan) to help her get Juniper off the farm. But Toni leads her straight to Edgar and the others. When Betty confronts Alice about Evelyn, she says she had already known. The farm wants Betty to join their ranks. They chase her as she runs away. She just manages to get into her car and drive off.
There is one final quest for the Jones family. There are 2 boxes. Jughead has to go into one of them. Kurtz lets Jughead talk to JB before he locks him in the box. Jughead panics but manages to get out. He discovers the corpse of Kurtz right outside his cage. Jughead finds JB safe at home.
saying goodbye in more ways than one
Josie finds Archie and tells him she is leaving. Jughead visits Gladys in the hospital. He asks her to stay so they could all be a proper family. Elio and Hiram meet in the men’s steam room and talk about Archie. Looks like Hiram is going to break his truce. Veronica goes to see Archie at his gym. She is able to get him back into the boxing ring again.
Gladys is leaving Riverdale, but JB is staying. The episode ends with Veronica telling Betty there was an accident with the prison transport. There were no survivors. Her father is presumed dead.
Well, this episode was certainly a doozy! The twist with Evelyn being Edgar’s wife was both shocking and disturbing. The farm is now officially a cult. The way they were yelling ‘join us’ in unison was just creepy. Maybe the farm is secretly a zombie horde? At this point, nothing would surprise me.
Toni seemed to change alliances pretty quickly. Just how powerful is the farm’s brainwashing methods anyway? I was really hoping that Hiram and Archie would be done fighting. Guess not. I can only hope that whatever happens won’t be as bad as Archie almost dying in prison. It’s sad that Josie is leaving. I liked her character and would have liked to see more of her. Hopefully, she makes some guest appearances next season.
I was impressed with how Jughead was able to forgive his mother for all the crap she pulled when she arrived. Mind you they had gone through something pretty traumatic together. I guess it changes your perspective a bit. Is it just me, or did the wedding thing with Alice and Edgar just sort of randomly pop up? Maybe I haven’t been paying attention, but I swear nothing was mentioned before this episode.
Overall I give this episode an 8.5/10
