Good day to you, Riverdale fans. It’s time for my review of the latest episode of Riverdale entitled ‘Dark Secrets of Harvest House’.
a shadow of herself
After a brief recap, the show opens up to prom night aftermath. We see FP (Skeet Ulrich) and the other police officers investigating the scene. Veronica (Camila Mendes) is eavesdropping on a conversation between Hiram (Mark Consuelos) and Hermione (Marisol Nichols). It seems like Hiram wants to buy Riverdale.
Veronica goes to Archie (KJ Apa) and Mary (Molly Ringwald) and thems them about her father’s latest plans. Mary introduces Veronica to an FBI Agent who says they have to catch Hiram red-handed and then they can get him once and for all. At the farm, Alice (Madchen Amick) reveals to Betty (Lili Reinhart) that she has the serial killer genes. Edgar (Chad Michael Murray) wants to heal her pain. She sits in a session with him.
During their session, Edgar cleverly hypnotizes her, and Betty reveals her secret fear about an evil self residing in her. Betty is in a dark room. Another figure appears. She reveals herself as Shadow Betty. This Betty drowned the family cat and pushed Polly (Tiera Skovbye) down the stairs. Shadow Betty also insists that she is the real Betty, and the other Betty is just an illusion.
the final fight
Betty talks with Jughead (Cole Sprouse). She tells him what happened. She also tells him about the letter she had gotten during prom. Jughead says he’ll look into it. After talking to several people, the trail finally leads to Ricky. Betty has lunch with Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch), Toni (Vanessa Morgan), Fangs, (Drew Ray Tanner), and Kevin (Casey Cott). She finds out Edgar turns their emotional pain into physical pain so it’s easier to deal with. There’s a ‘minor’ procedure to remove the pain. But Betty sees the large scar on Kevin which leads her to think it’s not so ‘minor’ and may be in fact a major surgery of sorts.
Veronica goes to Archie and tells him she has a plan to stop her father. Archie confronts Hiram in the steam room with his business associates and challenges him to a boxing match. Hiram accepts. Later, he tells Veronica to open up betting for the fight at La Bonne Nuit.
the lost boys
Jughead asks JB (Trinity Likins) about Ricky. She tells him Ricky is in fox forest, getting ready to ascend. Panicked, Jughead gets her to draw a map for him. Betty has another session with Edgar and stealthily puts wax in her ears to avoid the full hypnosis. Shadow Betty returns, and she is revealed to be Polly. Jughead goes to rescue Ricky and gets ambushed by a large group of boys. He manages to make it to the bunker and discovers Ethel (Shannon Purser) holed up inside. She tells Jughead that she is in charge of ‘The Lost Boys’ and that she is in love with the Gargoyle King.
Veronica asks Reggie (Charles Melton) for help in her scheme to take down her father. He agrees to assist her. Betty goes to Cheryl and the others about the hypnotizing. They dismiss her claims and demand proof. Later, Betty visits Evelyn who is sitting alone in a room with a dialysis machine. When Betty looks at the IV, she figures out Evelyn is taking anti-rejection drugs. Which one would take if they had recently gotten an organ transplant. Suddenly the large scar on Kevin’s lower back makes horrifying sense. Betty finds the room with a surgery table and a large freezer full of various human organs.
Jughead and Ethel leave the bunker. Ethel tells the others the quest is complete. One of the boys is missing, so Jughead and Ethel go search for him. They end up at the scrap yard. They find the boy inside the bus. But the Black Hood has found them. They just manage to escape.
the con is on
Veronica’s scheme is coming along. Hiram and Archie meet in the ring. The match starts. Archie is getting badly beaten up. Soon the gloves come off and it’s a no holds barred fist fight. It’s a raw and brutal fight. The FBI raids La Bonne Nuit and Veronica tells them where her father is. Just as Hiram is ready to deliver the killing blow to Archie, the police show up and FP arrests Hiram.
Later on, Veronica confronts her father in his holding cell. She says she won.
The Lost Boys are now under police protection. Grateful for his help, Ethel finally reveals who the Gargoyle King is. It’s Jason Blossom. Jughead shares the news with Betty, who tells him to go dig up Jason’s grave to see if it’s true. Armed with an icebox containing a human heart, Betty goes to Cheryl. She shows her the organ. Cheryl freaks out. Toni is about to get her procedure done. Betty goes to get Kevin and Fangs, while Cheryl goes to Toni.
freedom for one
Cheryl manages to get Toni out of the operating room but causes a big commotion. Guards run after them. Betty tells Kevin and Fangs what’s been happening. But they capture her and hold her until help comes. Cheryl sends Toni out the window to freedom and lets herself get captured.
Archie goes to see Veronica, but Reggie is already there. Reggie says that he confessed his feelings to Veronica and that they were returned in kind. Veronica looks apologetic as Archie leaves. He missed his chance to get back together with her.
Betty wakes up in restraints. She is on the operating table. Edgar is there. He tells the nurses to prep her for the procedure.
Jughead digs up Jason’s grave, and it’s revealed to be empty.
I seriously believe this show gets more ridiculous with each passing episode. Harvesting organs? Sounds like another B-rated horror movie to me. I really want to see how Jason Blossom is involved in all of this. If he didn’t die, then what was the whole point of Season One? The boxing match between Archie and Hiram was seriously brutal. I honestly thought for a moment that Hiram would have actually delivered the killing blow. Illegal or not, someone should have stepped in much sooner.
Are serial killer genes even a thing? If they are, that’s just weird. Alice and Polly are sadistic in trying to undermine Betty’s sanity like that. She needs professional help and definitely not the help she was getting at the farm. Let’s see how they attempt to tie this all together in the season finale.
I give this episode a 5/10.
