Looks like Kevin James won’t wait long to get back to television.
James, the onetime CBS sitcom King, will be heading to Netflix to star in the leading role in The Crew, a multi-cam comedy set in the world of NASCAR, TVLine has learned.
James, who also serves as the EP on the series, will play the crew chief working in a NASCAR garage. When the owner steps down and passes the team off to his daughter, James’ character finds himself at odds with the tech-reliant millennials she starts bringing in to modernize the team.
Jeff Lowell (The Ranch & Two and a Half Men) will serve as writer, showrunner and executive producer. Other EP’s also includes Je Sussman (The King of Queens), Todd Garner (Tag) and NASCAR’s Matt Summers and Tim Clark.
This makes the second return to the multi-cam sitcom after his recent sitcom Kevin Can Wait was canceled after two seasons. James is best for his role as Doug Heffernan on the hit CBS comedy The King of Queens.
When hearing about this news, I was like, “oh boy, here we go again. I hope that he learned from the mistakes he and the producers did in the second season of Kevin Can Wait.” They really screwed up that series and even though I was up and down on the second season, looking back it was very bad. For me, I’m interested to see what this show will bring but I’m not gonna be all in till I see something that I like. Maybe it would be good for James to jump into a different kind of comedy instead of family-style.
