Another emotional episode from 9-1-1.
The 9-1-1 producers keep giving us heartbreaking stories. This week was time to find out a bit more about Athena. As if what she has been through wasn’t enough, we learn that she had another traumatic event in her past. And, is it just me, or this is the week of flashbacks (from all kinds of shows)?
The episode starts right away with a bang. With Athena finding out about a gun that the police recovered, which was used in a thirty years old case. Needless to say that I was super confused because I did not remember this case. Luckily, both Bobby and Michael mention not knowing about this case, telling us that this is a “new” story and that we ‘re not supposed to know about it.
After that initial shock from Athena, follow a series of flashbacks from her teenage years. We learn that the person killed was her former fiancé and, in those flashbacks, we see how their relationship evolved. We see them meeting for the first time in college, how she decided to be a police officer and how they became engaged, among other events.
Seeing that this was an important person for her, obviously Athena makes her life destiny to find the person that killed him. The LAPD suggests that she should step out of the case, as she’s too close to it but, as expected, she can’t let it go.
Eventually she finds the guy, in a really touching scene. Turns out the guy felt guilty all this time and he turned his life around. He has now a family and a good living, it seemed like. This was a really powerful scene. It made us feel sorry for the guy, even if she killed Athena’s fiancé. But at the same time showed us Athena’s side. How what she’s doing is the right thing, even if the guy isn’t the same person that he used to be.
The episode ends with another powerful scene when Athena breaks down in Bobby’s arms. It was just a phenomenal acting from Angela Basset!
This was a pretty good episode and a really emotional one! However, as much as I love Athena and I loved to know more about her, I missed our usual crew. So I hope we get to see more of them in the next episode.
That’s it for now. Don’t forget to let us know all your thoughts on this episode in the comments and I’ll catch you up on the next one – Monday, November 11 at 8/7c on FOX.
