Hello, Riverdale fans! This week’s episode was pretty interesting. The plot is getting more complicated, confusing, and convoluted, so I hope you don’t get too mixed up reading my review. Anyways, let’s get to the review.
The episode starts off with showing Dodger (Juan Reidinger) recruiting the homeless kids to work for him at night. Archie (KJ Apa) continues his vigilante work. He rescues kids and gets them off the street and away from Dodger. At Stonewall Prep we see Jughead (Cole Sprouse) struggling with writer’s block. He meets up with Betty (Lili Reinhart). She suggests taking a small break from writing.
Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) has a nightmare. The doll is starting to freak her out. Archie goes to the community centre and finds it trashed. It was Dodger. Archie is getting angry now. Betty has figured out Charles’ (Wyatt Nash) schedule. She still doesn’t quite trust him. The Lodges have a family meeting. Hiram (Mark Consuelos) wants to start over, but Veronica (Camilla Mendes) adamantly refuses to have anything to do with him. FP (Skeet Ulrich) raids Dodger’s arcade and finds nothing. They cannot arrest him without evidence of his crimes.
a new mystery
While re-reading the Baxter Brothers books, Jughead uncovers a real-life mystery. Someone else wrote the very first novel in the series. He has a hunch that it’s his grandfather but needs more proof. Betty goes to the prison to talk to Chic (Hart Denton). She asks him about Charles. Chic tells her that he allegedly killed someone when the two of them were high on jingle-jangle. Cheryl is now convinced the house is haunted. She pours a circle of salt around the doll to trap it.
Betty goes to Charles and demands answers. Tells him what Chic had said. Archie talks to the kids to figure out why they work for Dodger. The kids get to play free arcade games and get free pizza. Cheryl is summoned to the office at school and informed that there was an accident at home. One of the twins, Dagwood choked on a ping-pong ball and was now at the hospital. Veronica begins training Hermione (Marisol Nichols) to be a hostess at the speakeasy.
success in the community
When Cheryl goes home, she finds the doll with Jason in the chapel. Her aunt and uncle have shown up at the house unexpectedly. Hermosa (Mishel Prada) and Hiram show up at the speakeasy. Veronica is not happy about it. Betty has Charles take a polygraph test. She asks her questions and finds out that he is a recovering addict. Hiram shows up at the community centre and expresses his condolences to Archie. He offers to make a donation to the gym. Archie politely declines his donation.
Cheryl’s aunt and uncle want to sell the maple syrup business. They need her signature. Cheryl was agreeable to it until they said they wanted to visit the chapel. Cheryl becomes angry at them and tells them to get out, and that she is not signing anything. Hiram shows up at the Pembrooke and effectively manages to seduce Hermione. Jughead has found more clues relating to the mystery of the novel. Arcade machines are installed at the community centre, but the kids want free food. Veronica offers them meals from Pops on the house. The kids spread the word.
Cheryl drowns the doll in an attempt to banish the spirit that lies within. Hiram announces he is moving back in. He tells Veronica that she’s still his favorite. and ‘the apple of my eye’. After doing some digging, Jughead finds a story his grandfather wrote that was published in an old literary magazine from Riverdale High. The writing style matches the one from the novel. Chic called the FBI about the murder that Betty’s mom had committed last year.
The community centre is bustling. Dodger is outside and wants to talk to Archie. He says he knows that Archie is the vigilante. Luckily the gang leaves without causing any additional trouble. Charles and FP “took care of the problem”. Betty is grateful and apologizes to Charles, and is now more trusting of him. Jughead meets with Mr. Dupont (Malcolm Stewart). He explains about the novel, and how his grandfather wrote it. Mr. Dupont suddenly becomes very hostile and starts trashing both his grandfather and his father. Says Jughead is lucky he doesn’t go to the headmaster to get him expelled for ‘these slanderous accusations’.
does no one care?
Hermosa comes to the speakeasy to talk to Veronica. She says that Hiram met her mother at his Miami club and took care of her until she died and then continued to care for Hermosa. She also mentions that Hiram and Hermione were renewing their vows and that they wanted Veronica to be there. Cheryl’s aunt and uncle come back to the house. They are determined to have Cheryl be declared ‘unfit’ so they could sell the business. Jughead goes to Mr. Chipping (Sam Witwer) and explains the situation with Mr. Dupont. He offers to help Jughead.
Archie is coming home when he sees something on his door. Figuring it’s Dodger he bursts inside and tells Mary (Molly Ringwald) that they needed to get out, but it’s too late. The house gets shot up by Dodger and his gang in a drive-by shooting. Veronica’s portrait in the study has been replaced by one of Hermosa. Hermosa tells Veronica that she is the favorite daughter and ‘the apple of his eye’. Veronica had been willing to attend their vows but is now determined to not give her family an inch. Archie goes to Hiram about Dodger and asks for his help, but Hiram refuses. At Stonewall, Mr. Chipping commits suicide and the other students do nothing.
Well we’re screwed now
Cheryl’s Uncle discovers Jason in the chapel. He is absolutely livid and threatens to kill Cheryl. He starts choking her. Toni hits him with a shovel and has most likely killed him. Charles goes to visit Chic in prison. Says the plan worked. They reveal that they are in a relationship by saying ‘I love you’ to each other. Cheryl’s aunt shows up. She asks about her Uncle and Cheryl lies and says she hasn’t seen him. When her aunt asks to search the house, Cheryl demands a search warrant.
Archie and Reggie (Charles Melton) find a body near the community centre. It’s Dodger. He’s been badly wounded. The episode ends with Mr.Dupont taking over Jughead’s class at Stonewall Prep.
Wow. That’s all I really have to say at this point. There are so many different plots it’s very hard to keep track of them. It’s super sad that Mr. Chipping killed himself. I think someone must have gotten to him and threatened him to keep quiet, but he couldn’t so he chose to end his life. Something else that’s quite interesting is how fast Hermione forgave Hiram. With all the awful stuff he did? I don’t buy it. Maybe she’s just biding her time until she can find a foolproof way to take him down.
So, Charles and Chic huh? I admit I didn’t see that coming. Does anyone else wonder if we’ll ever get to meet Jughead’s grandfather? I hope so. There’s so much hype about him it would be weird not to.
