In early 17th century Italy, women who are accused of being witches are rounded up and burned at the stake without much evidence. A young midwife named Ade is working with her grandmother to help an upper-class mother-to-be give birth. During the birth she feels that the the baby is in trouble. When the baby is stillborn, her grandmother knows what’s coming: They’re going to be accused of being witches and causing the death of the baby.
Meanwhile, Pietro is attending a secret medical school where he’s learning that anything that is thought to be witchcraft or the work of spirits can be explained by science. A man who supposedly died of possession, for instance, is shown to have a form of syphilis. Pietro is convinced that there are not witches in their village, and that the people who are accused of it are innocent.
